The Imperative in Classroom Commands We can use the imperative to give a direct order: Stand up straight. Give me the pen. We can use the imperative to give instructions: Open your book. Go to the board.   Requests in the Imperative Asking people to do things (requests) We often use can or could to ask people to do things: Can you open the door, please? or Could you stand up, please? Liz, can you go to the board? Excuse me, could you raise your hand to ask a question?

We also use will and would to ask people to do things (but can/could are more usual):

• Liz, will you sit down?
• Would you please be quiet? I'm trying to concentrate.
